Abstract

has emerged as an important healthcare delivery approach for improving access to medical services, particularly among populations living in rural, remote, and underserved communities. By using digital communication technologies, telemedicine enables patients to consult healthcare professionals without the need for extensive travel, thereby reducing geographical, financial, and logistical barriers to care. It can support remote consultation, follow-up care, health monitoring, specialist referrals, and health education across a range of medical conditions. Telemedicine became particularly significant during public health emergencies, demonstrating its potential to maintain continuity of care when conventional healthcare services are disrupted. However, its effectiveness in underserved communities may be influenced by limited internet connectivity, inadequate digital infrastructure, lack of technological literacy, affordability of devices and services, privacy concerns, and regulatory challenges. Addressing these barriers through improved digital infrastructure, appropriate training, affordable technology, and supportive healthcare policies is essential for equitable implementation. This article examines the role of telemedicine in expanding healthcare access in underserved communities, highlighting its potential benefits, implementation challenges, and contribution to more accessible and patient-centered healthcare delivery.
