Abstract

Healthcare facilities generate various forms of waste, including infectious materials, sharps, pharmaceutical waste, and chemical substances. Improper handling and disposal of healthcare waste can create significant risks to healthcare workers, communities, and the environment. This paper examines the importance of effective healthcare waste management in protecting public and environmental health. Appropriate segregation, collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal practices are essential for minimizing occupational exposure and environmental contamination. Staff training, regulatory compliance, adequate infrastructure, and continuous monitoring can improve healthcare waste management systems. Sustainable waste-management practices can contribute to safer healthcare environments and broader environmental protection.
